Reports from last night that Oilers captain Shawn Horcoff had been sent to Dallas in exchange for defenceman Philip Larsen and a 2016 seventh round draft pick were made official by both clubs this morning. News of the trade broke Thursday night, and all the pieces involved were known at that time.
Interestingly, the deal was initially reported on the Oilers’ official website as including prospect Curtis Hamilton. Hamilton, a second-round draft pick in 2010, has a strong WHL resume but in two seasons as a professional with the Oklahoma City Barons has struggled mightily, to the point that he has tumbled well down both the depth chart of the AHL team and also the Oilers’ prospect rankings. The initial report, seen above, has since been taken off the Oilers’ website.
It’s still interesting to see Hamilton’s name crop up there. It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise if the Oilers were to move the player – does this indicate that he was initially part of the discussions with Dallas and simply didn’t make the final cut of the trade, that his name is involved in another deal that has yet to be announced, or is it a straight-up accident by the Oilers’ website? At this point, it could be any of the three.
